So according to my little ticker on the right, I have less than 6 days before my half marathon debut this weekend. 6 DAYS!!
I'm starting to get a little nervous, but I'm mostly excited. I'm excited because I KNOW I can do this, and I know it will be fun too!
And I can't believe how far I've come in a relatively short amount of time! I didn't start to get really serious about my training until around Thanksgiving. Since then, I've run 101 miles. When I first ventured out on my training runs, away from the security of the treadmill, I had to have a way to carry my water. I always hike with my Camelbak, so I tried to strap it on for my runs. I remember how irritating it was jostling around, and how I couldn't figure out a convenient spot for my sippin' valve, and I was always getting tangled with my iPod wires. Now, my trusty pink Camelbak is a part of me. I don't even feel it when I'm running, but I feel naked without it. And I'm thankful that I trained with it, because now during the race, I'll have a convenient spot for my cell phone, GUs, camera, ipod, and my ID, which I will need to get my free beer. I suspect that beer will taste mighty delicious after 13.1 miles, even if it is a MGD 64.
I'm trying to focus myself mentally this week, and not let anything discourage me. I am a very slow runner, and it can be disheartening to read about other peoples' times. But that just shows me what I can work toward. This race is simply me vs. the voice inside my head. This race is the baseline that I will try to beat in San Diego (June 5 is still more than 4 months away! Who's with me?) This race won't break any records, but it will shatter the image I've had in my head for years...the image that I'm NOT a runner. This race will be a testament to how far I've come, and how much I've enjoyed the journey.
Wish me luck! I think I'm going to need it!

Good luck!! What an inspiration from one non runner to the next :-)
Um, excuse me? Did you tap into my brain from X number of years ago and write out my thoughts in this post? You hit the nail on the head with everything!
I'm with you in spirit, 100%. I was never able to do any half marathons that were in my area (timings never seemed to work out), but I've done a handful of 10k's, the last one when I was 4.5 months pregnant. I don't think ANYONE finished slower than me on that day! ;-)
I find running much more pleasurable if I push myself to always work at a certain level of difficulty, regardless of what the numbers on the stopwatch say. Some days that effort level will produce slow results, other days the same level of effort will break my personal record. Whatever. Go with the flow, push yourself to a difficulty level that will make you proud of yourself, and the clock can say whatever it wants to.
Go get 'em!
So, where do you get your GU? Erik has been unable to track some down.
Also, that's awesome that you're considering the San Diego one in June-Erik's thinking about it too! And I guess I'll come along because I'm his number one fan! :)
Good luck this weekend. I totally admire the mental strength it takes to run. I'm so impressed with Erik's progress, and that goes for you, too! :) I hope I see you Sunday! I think a beer would be fantastic!
You're going to rock this thing! I'm so proud of you for taking this leap--you're an inspiration to others and we don't care what your running speed is. I'm just in awe that you're out there, doing it!
GO, GO, GO CHANDY!!!!
(this is me, cheering for you)
You are going to do AWESOME!!! You have trained so hard and are mentally and physically prepared for it. You don't need luck, you've got skill!! :)
A note on the Camelback-I ran with one, and I had the biggest burns from them that scabbed up nicely. I wore a tank top though because I hate sleeves while I'm running so the straps of the camelback were on my shoulders. Lesson learned.
Can't wait to read about how it went!! So excited for you!
Yay, so glad you will be doing the half too! It sounds like you are prepared for this - you will do great!!
PS Let's try to not let those pesky times get us down. :)
